Thesis Title: Ethno-Religious Conflicts and Reconciliation in Maluku, Eastern Indonesia (MA Asian Studies, ANU 2003)
About
This thesis examines the relationship between Muslims and Christians in Maluku conflicts. It also covers the involvement of radical-jihadis groups in the conflicts. I argue that the peace initiatives of Muslims and Christians had taken the greatest role in peace building and democracy in Maluku.
Afterward, I also look at how peace building developed in Poso, Central Sulawesi. I talked to community from Muslims and Christians in Poso and monitored the 2005 local elections, when the victory came from head and deputy of district of Poso from Christian and Muslim respectively. This is what Galtung stated as 'power sharing'.
Now, I am working small project called 'Negotiation and Conflict Resolution: The Experience of Indonesian Muslims'. I argue that Indonesian Muslims - considered the periphery of Islamic civilization- could play an active role in peace initiatives in national and international levels. Ali Alatas, the former minister of foreign affairs of the Republic of Indonesia had mediated MNLF and Philippines government for peace agreement in 1996. Alatas also played a significant role in Cambodia reconciliation in 1988-9. Gus Dur -Abdurrahman Wahid, former President of Indonesia, is the greatest Ulema committed to protect the rights of minority groups in Indonesia, and actively mediated Muslims and Christians dialogue in the global world.
My current and most important work is writing on the Democracy as means of peace in Aceh, the implementation of peace agreement between GAM and Indonesia in 2005 and how Acehnese political and economic participation will strengthen peace. This is a PhD topics at the School of International and Political Studies, Deakin University Victoria, Australia.
